How did the map come together?

North America was named host in a January 8, 2025 season update video; the United States, with Allen and New York City as the first cities, was confirmed November 7, 2025 during media day for the 2025 final in Chengdu. Then came the one genuine twist: per the March 22, 2026 announcements at the First Stand finals in São Paulo, Riot moved the play-in stage to the Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles, citing logistical challenges, and awarded the CBLOL a second Worlds slot as part of the same restructuring of the Americas' footprint.
How do the 19 teams qualify?
Per the published structure: the LCK and LPL receive four berths each, the LEC, LCS and LCP three apiece, and the CBLOL two. One LCK berth is already spoken for — Hanwha Life Esports qualified automatically by winning MSI 2026 in Daejeon on July 12, per the tournament's results, though per the rules it must still reach its region's third-split playoffs to activate the berth. T1, per the 2025 result in Chengdu, enters as the three-time defending champion. Team Secret Whales, per the qualification results, became the first team officially booked for Worlds through the LCP.
What is the format?
Per Riot's published rules, three stages:
- Play-in, at the Los Angeles arena: four teams in a double-elimination bracket of best-of-fives, one survivor advancing.
- Swiss stage, in Allen: 16 teams, first to three wins advances, eliminations at three losses.
- Knockout, still in Allen until the finals move to Brooklyn: a single-elimination bracket of best-of-fives, ending at Barclays Center on November 14.
Every stage runs Fearless Draft — champions, once picked, stay banned for the rest of the series — the format's first full Worlds deployment and the biggest rules experiment the event has tried in years.
Why does the Brooklyn final matter?
Because Worlds' U.S. history is a West Coast story. Previous American finals leaned on California and Texas; per Riot's January 8, 2026 announcement, Barclays Center is the first East Coast venue to close the tournament — a deliberate push into the country's biggest media market two years before the region hosts again. The two-site structure also concentrates the event: nearly a month in Texas for the grind, one weekend in New York for the coronation. For a 19-team field crowned through Fearless Draft, where adaptability beats mastery of one composition, that geography is the least of the contenders' problems.
