Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film shakes it off with .8M in previews

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film summons Swifties to the silver screen, earning $2.8M in previews to kick off the weekend!

Swifties will swipe their debut cards this weekend on the way to theaters for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film! The AMC-distributed film is already flexing like a goddamned acrobat with $2.8M in previews. The in-your-face Taylor Swift experience played in 2,700 theaters, with showtimes starting at 6 p.m. local time.

Today’s preview numbers align with what analysts predicted yesterday, saying the film would bank less than $5M during previews. However, the weekend is just beginning, and Swifties could show up in droves for Taylor’s silver screen extravaganza. The fact remains that Eras Tour tickets are nigh-impossible to get, with fans getting turned away left and right even from pre-sale lottery drawings. I tried to gain access to the Eras Tour in Toronto next year and got waitlisted!

Projections for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour finds the Pennsylvania-born pop star earning $100M+ in the United States in 3,855 theaters. In some places, advance tickets for the film went on sale six to eight hours before showtime. Swifties pounced on tickets the moment they went on sale, kicking off what’s sure to be an exciting weekend at the box office for Taylor and company.

Taylor Swift’s tremendous power is why Jason Blum moved Exorcist: The Believer from its original October 13 launch date. “The one thing that scares me to death is Taylor Swift,” Blum joked with Entertainment Weekly about competing with Swift’s concert film for box office supremacy. Initially, Blum wanted to unleash The Exorcist: Believer on October 13, a Friday well-suited for the spookiest month of the year. However, when fans began sharing the hashtag #Exorswift on Twitter, Blum considered a release date change for the latest chapter in the Exorcist saga.

In a hilarious tweet, Blum said, “Look what you made me do,” a clever nod to Swift’s 2017 banger. “The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23 #TaylorWins,” Blum added.

“Obviously, we moved off that [date] and we bowed our head to Taylor Swift,” Blum concedes. “It was too risky to see if ‘Exorswift’ was going to take or not. People will still have the Exorswift opportunity, so maybe we got to have our cake and eat it too.”
