Daredevil: Born Again gets new showrunner & directors

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again taps a new showrunner in Dario Scardapane as well as the directors of Loki season 2.

THR has reported that Daredevil: Born Again has a new showrunner just weeks after it was revealed that the Marvel series would be receiving a creative overhaul.

Dario Scardapane, who worked on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan as well as Marvel’s The Punisher on Netflix, will serve as the new showrunner of Daredevil: Born Again. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the directing team who helmed multiple episodes of Moon Knight and Loki season 2, have also been hired to direct the remaining episodes of the Daredevil series.

Daredevil: Born Again had shot a little less than half its episodes before it shut down due to the WGA strike. It was during that time that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios reviewed the footage and decided it just wasn’t working. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were let go, and a major retooling was in the works. According to THR’s initial report, “Corman and Ord crafted a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence. Cox didn’t even show up in costume until the fourth episode. Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprises his role of Wilson Fisk for Daredevil: Born Again, downplayed the situation shortly after it was revealed. “We are going to bring forward the best series we can. One we can be proud of,” D’Onofrio said. “Every cool project I’ve been involved with has evolved constantly during pre-production, production and post. It’s just reported on these days as if it’s big news. It’s not. It’s simple a bunch of creatives doing their best to get it right. It’s a constant in this business. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Frankly I’d be worried if we were settling for less.

The new report states that Marvel will keep some of the scenes and episodes that have already been shot, but more “serialized elements” will be included. Marvel wants to bring back the action and gritty violence that the original Daredevil series on Netflix was known for. The new episodes and scenes will be written by Scardapane. It was originally announced that Daredevil: Born Again would consist of 18 episodes, but it’s no longer clear if that’s still the case.
