Universal and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone 2 will reach theatres and launch a franchise in 2025
Soon after director Scott Derrickson’s Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (check out our review HERE) was released last year, it was revealed that Derrickson and Hill were discussing the possibility of a sequel… Now Variety reports that Universal and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The release date is the only information that has been shared about The Black Phone 2, but a social media post from Derrickson indicates that he is still involved with the project in some capacity. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s going to be directing the sequel, scripting it for another director, or producing it alongside Blumhouse. Speaking of sinister franchises, when a sequel to Derrickson’s film Sinister was made, he wrote the script for Sinister 2 but passed the helm over to Ciarán Foy. And, of course, he ended up stepping away from the sequel to his Marvel movie Doctor Strange over creative differences, with Sam Raimi taking over as director on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
If you’d like to read the short story that The Black Phone is based on, it can be found in Hill’s collection 20th Century Ghosts, which you can buy HERE. The movie stars Mason Thames as Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Thames is joined in the cast by Jeremy Davies, Madeleine McGraw, and James Ransone, with Ethan Hawke as the killer known as The Grabber.
Derrickson wrote The Black Phone with his Sinister and Doctor Strange co-writer C. Robert Cargill. Derrickson and Cargill also produced the film with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum. Hill served as executive producer.
